SUNY Old Westbury Seed Library!
Our campus is excited is excited to announce the opening of the SUNY Old Westbury Seed Library, housed in the Library.
Seed Libraries are places where individuals can "borrow" seeds to grow in their gardens and engage with local biodiversity efforts. They also give individuals the opportunity to learn about seed saving so they can harvest their seeds at the end of the season, and return them to the library for others to use and plant the following Spring. Benefits of the Seed Library include:
Promoting biodiversity including preserving genetic diversity
Providing the community with seeds to grow healthy food and push back food insecurity
Supporting local seed-savers and gardeners
Encouraging increased engagement between the library and the community
How does it work?
The seed library is open to all students, staff, and faculty.
Individuals may take whichever seeds they plant to grow. Please be mindful and only take that which you plan to use.
Each packet contains enough seeds for one 1-2 plants, or one medium pot.
You do not need to "check out" the seeds at circulation. Simply take the packets you wish to use.
Returning the seeds is not required as plants don't always grow and harvesting the seeds may not be possible for a variety of reasons. However, if you can harvest the seeds and return them to us the next season, we would be grateful!
